Help on How To Play Can You Name

  • Quick info: A bit of help for those who are new to Can You Name.
Can You Name is a very simple but fun game. All you have to do is name as many of the items within a specific amount of time.

Controlling the Clock
Each Can You Name has a clock which looks like the picture below. Each game will give you a specific amount of time to input your answers with a time ranging from 1 minute to a huge 10 minutes...

The Can You Name Clock

Just above the clock you will see these controls.

Click on the Start Playing button and the clock will begin to count down. Once this happens the Give Up button will become active and this can be clicked at any time to end the game.

Entering Your Answers
As soon as the clock starts to countdown, the large text box becomes active which allows you to begin inputting your answers. You need to make sure that your spelling is up to scratch as misspellings will not be accepted. There is two ways that Can You Name accepts your answers - on most games as soon as you have typed in a correct answer, the game will accept it. On some games you will have to press enter to get Can You Name to accept each answer. This is due to similar answers such as in our "Can You Name Countries?" there is both Niger and Nigeria. A message will be shown below the clock on games where you must press enter as a friendly reminder which looks like this...

Keeping Score
As shown in the picture below, right under the Answer Input box is a counter showing the number of answers which you have named and the number which are left to name. Once an answer is accepted these amounts will be updated. You will also see that there is two progress bars, one show you the percentage of answers which you have entered correctly and the other one shows the average score of everyone which has played that game.

There are two ways we display your answers. One way is a simple alphabetical list of all named answers and the other put your answers into a grid. As each answer is named the grid square that the answer goes in will change from red to green.

After The Game Has Finished
Once the clock has reached zero or you have clicked on the Give Up button the buttons in the image below will be become active.

The Can You Name End Controls

The Display What You Missed button will display all answers which you have missed either in a red box below these buttons or if the answers are in a grid then the grid will be updated.

The retry button can be clicked which will refresh the page so you can start all over again with the current Can You Name game.

Saving Your Scores
If you are logged in, our game will automatically save your score to your saved scores page. But don't worry your score will not be saved if you retry a game and you get a worse score than what you got previously. Your saved scores page can be shared with your friends to see if they can beat you.

Commenting and Voting On Each Game
Once you have created an account and logged in, you can easily vote and comment on each game. At the bottom of each game page you can see a button like this...

Display Comment Button

Clicking this button will display all comments currently left on that game and also the comment box for you to leave your own comment. We hide the comments because some people may write answers which could ruin your game if you accidentally see them. With each comment you can also rate the current game too from 1 to 5 stars. If you want to rate a game without leaving a comment you can click on the stars next to the description of the game at the top of the page.

We hope this helps you to get playing Can You Name and we hope you enjoy playing as much as we enjoy creating new topics for you.
